At CEATEC 2010, Hitachi Displays exhibited a mass-production prototype using MEMS shutter display technology developed by Pixtronix.
In this display, each pixel has a MEMS shutter that opens and closes at high speed. This adjusts the picture brightness by controlling the light volume. This display system doesn't need the polarizing films and color filters that are required for LCDs. As a result, this prototype consumes less than half the power of an LCD, while reproducing colors more vividly.
